At least two people have been killed and other 18 wounded as thousands of Egyptians calling for trial of ousted President Hosni Mubarak clashed with the army on Cairo’s central Tahrir Square, local media said on Saturday.
The violence occurred overnight as the army tried to disperse a crowd of about 2,000 protesters calling for Mubarak and his henchmen to be tried for corruption. Doctors in Cairo hospitals said that the injured and dead suffered gunshot wounds but the army denies using live rounds.
The angered protestors on Saturday promised to remain relentless in the pursuit of their demands, including the social reforms and the prosecutions of former regime figures. They also want the Egyptian army to hand over power to a civilian government as part of the promised reforms.
The armed forces said in a statement Saturday morning that necessary measures against those who try to destabilize the situation in the country will be taken.
