Two alleged Islamist insurgents attacked police during a document check in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan on Sunday, but were slain by return fire, the Interior Ministry said.
The men mere driving a Zhiguli sedan that police flagged for a check on a federal highway, opening fire instead of showing their papers, the ministry said in a statement.
No police officers were injured in the shootout, the report said. Two Kalashnikov automatic rifles were found in the Zhiguli.
One of the two men was identified as Viktor Volkov, a militant placed on a wanted list for numerous attacks on law enforcement officers, local investigators said, adding that his companion was also tentatively pegged for an insurgent.
