Vladivostok Builders Close Bridge Opened by Medvedev

A newly-built bridge opened by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok ahead of September’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, will be closed for “waterproofing and asphalt laying,” Pacific Bridge Construction Company (TMK) said on Thursday.

In a statement issued on Thursday, TMK, the main APEC builder, said that it would also postpone the opening of the pedestrian bridges over the Zolotoy Rog and the Amur Bay because of “waterproofing and asphalt laying works” that needed to de carried out after the heavy rains in May.

On Monday, Medvedev opened a bridge which connects Vladivostok’s mainland with Russky Island, the summit’s main venue, and praised the city for its high performance while preparing for the summit.

The premier also said that Vladivostok reminded him of San Francisco because of the suspension bridges spanning the city.

In mid-June, the $930-million road built to connect the airport in Vladivostok with Russky Island collapsed after heavy rains. Medvedev then demanded punishment for those responsible for the poor construction.

The 2012 APEC summit that will be held in the Far Eastern city September 8-9 will cost Russia about 600 billion rubles ($18.5 billion) to build over 50 facilities and reconstruct public utility networks.
