5.4 magnitude earthquake hits southeast Kazakhstan

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake was registered in the southeast of Kazakhstan on Sunday morning, no casualties or destruction were reported as of yet, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Website.

The earthquake struck at 8:31 local time (2:31 GMT), with its epicenter 71 km (44 miles) to the northeast of Kazakhstan’s largest city of Almaty and at a depth of 20 km.

An officer on duty at the Almaty emergency situations department said the power of the earthquake in the city was measured at 4.0 magnitude.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center says the earthquake in Kazakhstan was measured at 5.5 magnitude.
