KIEV, September 1 (Itar-Tass) — Physicians have established that Ukraine’s former Interior Minister, Yuri Lutsenko, who is now kept in the Lukyanovsky pretrial detention center, is ill and has hepatic cirrhosis, Lutsenko’s wife Irina told a news conference Thursday.
Leading specialists of the National Medical University and the Ministry of Public Health examined the former minister in custody Tuesday, August 30, and identified cirrhosis compounded with portal hypertension and esophageal varicose veins dilatation.
“The physicians stated in their conclusions that Lutsenko’s health is displaying negative dynamics,” Irina Lutsenko said.
She indicated that, proceeding from the results of examination, the lawyers defending the former minister filed a petition with Kiev’s Pechersky district court to allow the custody center to hospitalize her husband for a course of medical treatment.
However, the court passed a resolution Thursday permitting “measures of medical character for the defendant Lutsenko on the premises of the custody center with the assistance of physicians from the Ministry of Public Health.”
“The authorities simply want to eliminate him /Lutsenko/ physically by not allowing him to get medical treatment,” Irina Lutsenko said.
From May 10 to May 23, Lutsenko underwent medical tests at Kiev’s Emergency Medicine Hospital in connection with a deterioration of health after a hunger strike.
Lutsenko is charged with offering an illegal employment to his driver, as well as the issuance of an apartment and the granting of a retirement benefit to the man.
One more offense he allegedly committed is an embezzlement of funds allocated for festive events on the occasion of Police Day.
The damage he ostensibly inflicted on the state totals $ 125,000.
He was placed to custody December 26, 2010.
