Dozens detained in Belarus protests over economy

Dozens of people were detained in central Minsk on Wednesday for taking part in an unauthorized protest in the Belarusian capital.

Between several hundred and several thousand people, according to different estimates, took part in the protest against the government’s economic policies.

Police had detained some 20 people within minutes and then they started grabbing everyone who happened to be around – both protesters and passersby.

Oleg Gruzdilovich, a correspondent for the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Belarusian service covering the event, was escorted into a police vehicle.

Riot police started pushing the protesters from central Freedom Square to nearby streets.

A similar protest took place in the Belarusian capital a week ago with an estimated several thousand participants.
