64 Pimps Found Guilty in Perm

A Perm court on Wednesday sentenced 64 pimps to prison terms or fines in one of the largest trials in recent memory.

The Perm City Court ordered 41 of the defendants to serve prison terms of 10 months to 10 years and the other 23 to pay fines ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 rubles ($3,550 to $7,100), regional prosecutors said in a statement.

The defendants were convicted of organizing and soliciting prostitution through an illegal sex organization that operated from 1999 to 2006 and exploited more than 200 women, including at least 28 who were underage, the statement said.

Seven people were taken into custody after the trial ended, Interfax reported.

The court ultimately recognized 34 women as victims of the prostitution business, and 14 of them were underage, the report said.

The leader of the criminal group, Eduard Davydov, 42, received a one-year sentence, tabloid Lifenews.ru reported.

The trial lasted two years, and it took the jury about two months to hand down its ruling.
