MOSCOW, Sep 14 (PRIME) — Russian businessman Mikhail Prokhorov denied in an interview with Echo Moskvy radio station Wednesday reports that he planned to quit his post as the leader of Russias pro-business Right Cause political party, RIA Novosti reported.
Russian media reported earlier that Prokhorov could announce his decision to quit the party at a news conference scheduled for Wednesday. Meanwhile, members of the Right Cause party were expected to discuss the issue of changing the partys leader at a three day meeting that began on Wednesday, Russian media reported citing unspecified sources.
Meanwhile, earlier on Wednesday, Maxim Chizhov, head of the partys press office said that he did not have reliable information on Prokhorovs dismissal.
In turn, Prokhorov said at a news conference that he has decided to dismiss the partys executive committee headed by Andrei Dunayev, as well as a number of the partys top officials. Prokhorov said he had appointed Rifat Shaikhutdinov as acting head of the executive committee.
Meanwhile, Prokhorov said that there is no split within the party.
Prokhorov is not attending the partys closed pre-election meeting. Participants of the meeting have elected the mandate and treasury boards.
Meanwhile, spokespeople for Prokhorov said that his opponents could vote for his dismissal, as they had taken control of the meeting and received the largest mandate.
