Ballet Gala
Sept. 14, 7 pm, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, 4/31 Triumfalnaya Ploshchad, m. Mayakovskaya
As part of the Russian National Orchestra festival this month, an impressive ballet gala is to be held at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall on Wednesday.
First on the program is Tchaikovsky’s “Four Seasons,” 12 miniatures written for each month of the year. Vera Arbuzova has choreographed the pieces to be danced by three dancers, and she will take part as well.
The second half will be Prokofiev’s “Cinderella” suite, transcribed for two pianos by Mikhail Pletnev. Some of Prokofiev’s most poignant music will be on display here, as well as ample opportunity for showing off ballet dancers.
The famed Yulia Makhalina from St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre will be dancing the role of the stepmother; she dances a stepmother so exotic and outrageously commanding that she makes any Cinderella look wan and boring in comparison.
