The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan are meeting in Moscow for talks today on their long-running dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh.
The meeting between Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadiarov is mediated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The session is to prepare for a meeting of the three countries’ presidents later this month in Kazan.
Aliev has said he is willing to go to war to reclaim the Armenian-backed territory, which broke away during the fall of the Soviet Union.
Last month, the G8 called on both sides to come to an agreement soon.
The West has called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to endorse the basic principles for a settlement drafted in 2007, including a gradual Armenian withdrawal from the territories around Nagorno-Karabakh and an “interim status” for the region, but not full independence.
