TOKYO, August 7 (Itar-Tass) — The death toll from Japan’ s devastating earthquake and tsunami last March has reached 15,680, the country’s main police department said on Sunday.
According to the latest police data, 4,830 people remain unaccounted for. The highest number of victims is registered in prefectures of Miyagi, Iwata and Fukushima. The list of victims expanded over repeated quakes in the region.
Around 90,000 people still remain in temporary housing units. Japan’s authorities promise to create normal conditions for their living and practically close evacuation centres by October.
