Foul-Mouthed Captain Barred From Submarine

A submarine commander who went viral on the Internet after he was filmed confronting a superior with a torrent of obscenities has been barred from sailing.

Roman Shchury, commander of the K-295 Samara nuclear submarine, has been transferred to work onshore at a Navy office at his own request following a psychiatric examination, Roman Martov, a spokesman for the Pacific Fleet, told Interfax on Monday. He did not elaborate.

Shchury has not been demoted, and his new position corresponds with his title of “captain first rank,” a source in the General Staff of the Pacific Fleet told the tabloid Lifenews.ru (link).

Military prosecutors earlier found that Shchury’s tirade violated the military manual, which requires officers to show respect in on-duty conversations.

Shchury was filmed telling off a superior for not congratulating his crew on Navy Day.

The video was uploaded to YouTube in December but only went viral in mid-May, attracting more than 42,000 views. The video was not dated but was apparently shot around last year’s Navy Day, celebrated on June 25.
