High jumper Chicherova brings seventh gold to Russia

Russia’s Anna Chicherova has brought her country a seventh gold at the World Athletics Championships in Daegu after winning the women’s high jump competition.

­The 29-year-old beat the two-time defending champion Blanka Vlasic of Croatia in the final.

Both athletes cleared the same height of 2 meters and 3 centimeters, but the Russian obtained the result in fewer attempts.   

Italy’s Antonietta Di Martino earned bronze by jumping two meters.

Meanwhile, the Russian women’s team, consisting of Antonina Krivoshapka, Natalia Antyuh, Lyudmila Litvinova and Anastasia Kapachinskaya, have grabbed bronze in the 4×400 relay.

The US quartet of Sanya Richards-Ross, Allyson Felix, Jessica Beard and Francena McCorory were first with the season’s best result of 3 minutes and 18.09 seconds, while a surprise silver went to the stalking horses of the Jamaican team.

Team USA are unbeaten in the event for three consecutive world championships.
