HIV up 20% in Russia in first half of 2011

The number of HIV cases in the first six months of 2011 rose 20% year on year, Russia’s consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said.

The incidence of acute respiratory infections increased more than 20% in January through June, to 13,000 per 100,000 people compared to 10,000 per 100,000 in 2010.

Whooping cough was up 27% and measles 34% compared to the first half of last year.

At the same time the number of acute hepatitis A cases was down 43.5% and acute hepatitis B – down 20.3%.
