Japan’s Kohei Uchimura has become the first gymnast to win three World Championship golds in men’s individual all-around competition.
Uchimura grabbed his historic third gold at the home Worlds in Tokyo, Japan, showing a confident result of 93.631 points.
The 22-year-old has already claimed individual all-round golds at the World Championships in 2009 and 2010.
“Of course I’m happy,” said Uchimura, who has been undefeated since his silver at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, said. “I didn’t mind the scores, I was only focused on my performance and doing the best performance I could do.”
Until now, the greatest number of all-round world championships ever won by a male gymnast has been two. The USSR’s Yury Korolev and Dmitry Belozerchev were among those to achieve this.
Meanwhile, the Russian team have so far snatched two silver medals in the Japanese capital.
Both medals were bagged by the ladies in team all-round and individual all-round courtesy of Viktoria Komova, who was separated from first place by just 0,033 points.
