Police in the Tyumen region in Siberia detained a man who stole 1.5 tons of hay from a local field – only to find out he did it for love.
The native of Sladkovo village, whose name was withheld, collected the hay from a field some 30 kilometers away from the village, carrying it away in a trailer, regional police said on its Web site.
The man then deposited the haul in the yard of his girlfriend’s house, the report said.
When detained, he said he had an argument with the woman and hoped to make up to her by presenting her with the gift of hay.
The lovestruck criminal now faces up to two years behind bars on thievery charges, police said on Friday, adding that the incident took place last Sunday, but was not reported before.
