The wife of Egyptian ex-president Hosni Mubarak, Suzanne, has been taken to an intensive care unit with severe chest pains shortly after hearing the news that her detention had been ordered.
The 70-year-old former first lady was questioned on Friday over suspicions that she used her husband’s position to illegally amass wealth. Shortly after the questioning, her 15-day detention in a Cairo prison was ordered.
Mubarak stepped down in February after weeks of protests against his 30-year rule. The 83-year-old is currently being treated for heart problems in a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
Mubarak and his family have been banned from leaving the country and their assets have been frozen. Alaa and Gamal Mubarak, two sons of the ousted president, are currently being held in a prison outside Cairo.
