New quake jolts northeastern Japan

A fresh tremor measuring 6.6 rattled Japan’s northeastern Fukushima prefecture on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Service (USGS) said.

There is no information whether the tremor, one of the strongest so far in a series of aftershocks following the 9.0-magnitude March 11 earthquake, has affected the stricken Fukushima-1 nuclear plant.

Japan’s National Police Agency said the death toll from the quake and subsequent tsunami has reached 9,079, with the number of people reported missing dropping to 12,645.
