Russian parliamentary Vice Speaker Svetlana Orlova said on Sunday the upper house of parliament will consider the nomination of outgoing St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko as the Russian parliament’s upper house speaker on September 21.
“The next meeting will be held on September 21 and this issue will be considered,” Orlova said.
Last week, Matviyenko sent a letter of resignation from the post of governor to President Medvedev taking a further step towards Russia’s third-highest political post.
The new St. Petersburg’s governor Georgy Poltavchenko has previously signed a decree on Matvienko’s appointment as a representative of the city government in the Federation Council.
