Second Russian Custody Death in 2 Weeks

VLADIVOSTOK, March 19 (RIA Novosti) – A man held by police in Russia’s Far East was found dead on Friday without any traces of injuries on his body, which makes it the second custody death in the country in the past two weeks, a local investigation committee spokesman said on Monday.

“On Friday, March 16, police discovered the dead body of a 44-year-old man, who had been taken into custody on suspicion of larceny,” the source said, adding that an inquiry had been opened into the case.

Earlier this month, a detainee died in hospital in the Russian city of Kazan in Tatarstan from injuries, which, according to his relatives, were caused by policemen sodomizing him with a Champagne bottle before death, he said. Five policemen have been sacked and arrested in connection with the case.
