Security Tight in Moscow for Putin Inauguration

The inauguration ceremony of President-elect Vladimir Putin has kicked off in the Kremlin amid tightened security measures throughout downtown Moscow.

Roads have been closed for ordinary transport as Putin’s motorcade sped to the Kremlin shortly before noon on Monday. Few pedestrians could be seen in the streets along the route, and nearby metro stations have been closed for passengers.

More than 20,000 police and security officers have been deployed across Moscow, including 13,000 in downtown Moscow. Mobile riot police units have been set up across the city ahead of the event, which is taking place less than 24 hours after police battled protesters opposed to Putin’s rule a short distance from the Kremlin.
