Typhoon Bolaven Cuts Electricity in Far East

Almost 10,000 people in Russia’s Far Eastern Primorye Territory were left without electricity after typhoon Bolaven downed power lines, a spokesman for the emergencies ministry’s crisis response center said on Wednesday.

“Unfavorable weather conditions (winds of up to 25 meters per second [56 mph], rain) disrupted power supplies in two districts of the Primorye Territory (three settlements, 2,100 homes with 9,800 residents),” the spokesman said.

Power supplies to two affected settlements have already been restored. The village of Vityaz with a population of 195 people remains without electricity.

The typhoon currently approaches the Khabarovsk Territory. It is expected to move to the Jewish Autonomous Region by 16:00 Moscow time [noon GMT] on Wednesday.

Typhoon Bolaven is the strongest to hit the region in several years. On Saturday wind speeds near the center of typhoon reached 70 meters per second (157 mph) and caused waves up to 10 meters high (33 feet).
