MOSCOW, August 27 (Itar-Tass) —— The United Russia Party will offer to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev three candidates for the post of St. Petersburg governor, Chairman of the United Russia Supreme Council and State Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov said at a meeting of the United Russia Supreme Council presidium here on Saturday.
The United Russia Party will offer to the president the candidates of St. Petersburg Vice-Governor and the chief of the gubernatorial office, Mikhail Oseyevsky, Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative in the Central Federal District, Georgy Poltavchenko, who is the acting St. Petersburg governor, and chairman of the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly Vadim Tyulpanov.
The consultations over the candidates for St. Petersburg governor lasted for about a week. On August 22, the president accepted the resignation of Valentina Matviyenko, who had occupied the post of St. Petersburg governor since October 2003. Georgy Poltavchenko was appointed as acting governor.
Matviyenko resigned as governor ahead of time after her victory at the elections in a St. Petersburg municipal district. She can become a member of the Federation Council, after she was elected as a municipal deputy. The senators pledged to elect Matviyenko as speaker of the Federation Council.
