Police Officer, Militant Killed in North Caucasus Raid

A police officer was killed and another one was injured during an anti-militant raid in the capital of Russia’s North Caucasus republic on Dagestan, an Interior Ministry spokesman said.

Police carried out the raid against a member of a local militant group in Makhachkala late on Saturday.

The militant opened fire on police as he was blocked inside a building at around 11:30 pm local time (19:30 GMT), the spokesman said.

The militant was killed, he said.

The troubled North Caucasus region sees frequent attacks on law enforcement officers and government officials as Moscow continues to battle an Islamist insurgency there.

At least 12 militant groups made up of about 300 people are believed to be operating in Dagestan.

Russian authorities have moved to improve the poor economic conditions in the North Caucasus republics and curb unemployment, which are considered to be the main factors driving local residents to join militant groups.
